A Rajasthani wedding is famous for its colour, music and royal traditions. Every ritual, from the first Tilak to the final Vidaai, has a meaning and brings both families closer. Customs can vary between communities such as Rajput, Marwari, Jain and others, and from one region to another, but the rituals below are common across many Rajasthani weddings. Use this guide to understand what happens at each stage and plan your venue and timeline around them.
Pre-Wedding Rituals
1. Tilak (Tika)
The Tilak ceremony formally seals the match. Male members of the bride's family visit the groom's home, apply a tilak on his forehead and give gifts such as clothes, sweets, a sword or jewellery. It is usually held at the groom's home or a small banquet hall.
2. Ganesh Puja (Vinayak Sthapana)
Lord Ganesha is invited first to remove obstacles from the wedding. Families often invite Ganesha with the first wedding card. In the Hadoti and Sawai Madhopur region, many families send the first invitation to the Trinetra Ganesh temple at Ranthambore.
3. Pithi Dastoor (Haldi)
The Rajasthani version of the Haldi ceremony. A paste of turmeric, sandalwood and herbs is applied to the bride and groom in their own homes, with women singing traditional folk songs. After Pithi, the couple traditionally do not leave home until the wedding. Read our Haldi decoration ideas for setup inspiration.
4. Mehendi
Intricate henna designs are applied to the bride's hands and feet, often with hidden initials of the groom. The evening is full of music, dancing and food. Book an experienced bridal mehendi artist early in peak season.
5. Mahira Dastoor (Bhaat / Mayra)
The bride's or groom's maternal uncle (mama) and his family arrive with gifts of clothes, jewellery and money for the family. It is an emotional ritual that honours the mother's side of the family.
6. Palla Dastoor
A few days before the wedding, the groom's family sends clothes, jewellery and gifts to the bride, which she may wear at the wedding.
7. Janev and Mameru (in some communities)
Some families perform a sacred thread ceremony for the groom, while others follow regional customs before the wedding day.
Wedding Day Rituals
8. Baraat and Ghodi Chadhna
The groom, dressed in a sherwani and colourful safa (turban), often with a sword, rides a decorated mare or elephant to the bride's venue with music and dancing. Plan enough space and a clear route at your venue for the baraat. See our entry ideas.
9. Toran
A unique Rajasthani ritual. At the entrance of the bride's venue, a decorated wooden toran is hung. The groom touches it with a neem stick or sword before entering, symbolising victory over evil.
10. Jaimala (Varmala)
The bride and groom exchange flower garlands on the stage. Friends often try to lift the couple higher to make it fun.
11. Granthi Bandhan and Pheras
The couple's garments are tied together and they take seven rounds (phere) around the sacred fire, making seven promises to each other. In many Rajasthani weddings, the bride leads in the first rounds and the groom in the rest.
12. Kanyadaan
The bride's parents place her hand in the groom's hand, one of the most emotional moments of the wedding.
Post-Wedding Rituals
13. Vidaai
The bride bids farewell to her family. She throws rice grains behind her as she leaves, wishing prosperity for her parents' home.
14. Grihapravesh
The bride is welcomed at her new home. She kicks a kalash filled with rice and enters with footprints dipped in kumkum water.
15. Pagelagni and Fun Games
The bride is formally introduced to the groom's relatives, followed by games such as finding a ring in a bowl of milk.
Planning Your Venue Around the Rituals
- Choose a venue with separate spaces for Mehendi, Sangeet, Pheras and the reception.
- Make sure the entrance can hold the Toran and baraat welcome.
- Fix the phera time with your wedding pandit and share it with the venue and photographer.
- Plan Rajasthani decor with marigold, mirror-work and leheriya colours. See stage decor ideas.
